Gen 2 Wagon weak points?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I'm going to check out an 83 wagon this afternoon, just wondering if there are things to watch out for in these vehicles. It's listed for 500 so my hopes aren't too high about its condition, but any advice about when to run away is appreciated.

Thanks folks!

Rust, rust, and more rust.  What got me on my 83 Brat is the rear subframe.  The common areas weren't bad, but crawl up underneath and check where the rear cross member bolts up.

Check the windshield area for cancer, take a close look at the spare tire well under the hood for rust. Also as noted check the rockers and rear crossmember area. Lastly don't forget to crawl under the dash with flashlight and look for rust./ water damage in the cowl area at the bottom of the windshield.  Make sure the seats aren't about to rot through the floor, ect.  Mechanical issues are easily fixed. Too much rot and I would pass at any price. Fine tooth comb and good luck :)
