Shift-shock when changing gear (automatic 4 speed)

Featured Replies

Hi Fellow Subaru Owners,

I own a 2008 impreza RX - 2 litre standard, 4 sp auto hatch with 50,000 km - actually my wife's car and driven as though it belongs to God.

Recently, when the auto changes gear, there is a thump felt that actually shakes the car. When slowing down, the gear changes again provide some shift-shock but to a lesser degree.

The Subaru dealer's mechanic drove it and experienced it but his computer analysis shows no faults. Can anyone offer meaningful advice ? The next stage is evidently to take out the gearbox and ship it off to specialists to have it diagnosed and repaired. Quotes at this stage are rubbery but $2,000+ is being discussed. In a modern car with 50,000 gentle km????

Help!

Kind Regards

Thomas

check the negative battery terminal. seems random, but when i replaced my corroded, rusted out negative battery terminal it fixed that very same problem in my wife's 4EAT! :)

best of luck!

Subaru should pay for this one .

a "computer analysis" is not going to show a failing axle joint, failing carrier bearings, failing u-joints in the driveshaft, bad struts, worn bushings, fluid level & condition....

there are a lot of other possibilities besides the tranny itself going bad (which does not happen that often), including the one mentioned above about the corroded battery cable...

did the dealer shop put the car up on a lift and actually physically inspect the driveline components? If not, I would be finding another shop...

Kinda sounds like what my car is doing.  Have had the problem for years and no one has been able to figure it out.  It will shift at the wrong times.  Varys a bit but will drop gears with a thud feels like being rear ended always when coasting on flat ground often going slow  or slowing down.  Does your oil at temp light ever come on?  Mine will also shift when the rpms are too high.  If I pull over turn off the car and press the gas twice it will usaully stop.
