Hi All!

 

Do they sell an electronic distributor upgrade kit for the EA71 engine? I've been trying to adjust my ignition system on my 79' wagon and it's a real PITA getting the timing to stay right. My motorcycles have electronic ignition, and it's great not having to ever mess with that!

 

I've heard about people using the distributor out of an EA81 motor. What years should I look for on ebay? Do I need the coil pack from the donor car as well?

Have a few electronic diss for ea71s came on 78 and up but bow wow sells a points to electronic upgrade for vw vans whould work was about 60 $ if i remember right and was a generic kit

'79 is the year for transition from points to e'tron. Maybe because yours is 4WD ? I'm still using points but threaten to swap often. Find them on eBay rebuilt and ready to drop in for around $50.

I remember adapting a motorcycle electronic ignition into my first EA71 distributor back in early eighties while I was a financially embarrassed bike mechanic. IIRC it was pretty easy, came off a Kawasaki I think. Used the bikes dual coil setup with longer wires installed so no more distributor cap    Worked great!

you can use a ea81 diss as long as you also change the bracket
