Horn Relay

Recommended Posts

I have a 1988 DL (Loyale) Wagon with EA82 engine.  I cannot find the horn relay if there is one.   My Haynes manual does not have a wiring schematic for this year vehicle - odd.  Wiring schematics in the same manual for other years vehicles indicate no horn relay, so maybe my 1988 does not have one either?  Anyway, both my horns do not work and I thought it best to check the horn relay.  Fuse is 15 amp and is good.  Any clues?

I don't believe there's a 'relay' for the horns. I know the Haynes book mentions a relay, but the wiring schematics I have from the Mitchell books show it going to a diode/fusible link, so I'd say check those four fusible links in the black box by the battery. Also, test the horns themselves by applying battery power to them directly.

In addition, if you find you have power at the horn and still no sound when it is grounded.... there is what I call a 'tuning mechanism' on the back side of the horn.   If you loosen the nut, you can adjusted the mechanism so that it will vibrate when power is ran thru it.

Sometimes, this 'tuning mechanism' rusts or oxidizes making the contacts not so inviting to ground.   Clean them up, and adjust until you get the vibration - thus making the horn sound.

I usually 'exercise' my horns regularly to keep the contacts clean.   My kids think I'm just a rude driver, but there is a method to my madness... ha!   Besides, I know everyone in town and I bee-beep them.
