reupholstering door panels

Featured Replies

Hey All,

twenty years of sun, sweat and abuse has left my door panels in pretty rough shape. as we know, no one reproduces these door panels, so i decided to take a run at reupholstering them myself. i ordered some foam backed vinyl and 3m adhesive and after an afternoon of cutting an gluing, i have a mostly acceptable result. not perfect, but fine for a daily driver. heres some pics.

Nice work! I am excited to see your speaker project.

You and I are definitely going to have to get together on this one :D  I want to do this in my car eventually as well, but vinyl be damned, its automotive grade leather all the way, and none of that stock blue colored crap either :D  Looks good

Only suggestion I'd make is either shave some of the foam around the rectangular hole, or, make a small block of wood the size of the plastic bezel & compress the vinyl so the bezel fits better. Had a time getting the bezels in place on my 87 GL after the upper panels were redone. Caused the electric door locks to hang up a little too because the bezels were in the way of the rods. Too much foam behind the vinyl.

Just a suggestion.;)

Thanks guys!

czny, I did a test fit on the door handle trim, and you're right it's kind of tight, but I think I can get by with it. If not, I'll do like you say and trim it a little.

That looks awesome! What size speakers are you gonna put in?

Hey Sdam87, 5.25" in the front, 6.5" in the rear.

I wanted to mount the fronts in the stock location, but found that the speakers were deep enough that they wouldn't let the window roll down. They will be surface mounted instead. I ran all new wiring instead of trying to hack into the stock speaker wiring. Here is a pic of how the fronts will be mounted.
