was hopping any one can tell me what trans that will interchange with 

my 1997 subaru Legacy outback wagon it is the 4speed auto with the EJ25

base model nothing special 

will a Legacy with a EJ22 work?

or do i need one out of a legacy outback?

The gear ratio is usually wrong on a Legacy for an Outback.  Usually a 98-96 Outback will work.  The 99 is quite a bit different but might work.  You could gut the trans by taking the rear tailhousing, pinion shaft and front diff off and switching all over but thats sometimes intimidating to people.

so only a 96-98 will work for my 97 

so why is my car a Legacy Outback

an not just a outback?

and do you know haw hard it is to

poll a trans apart 2 swap the guts 

you can use any auto trans from an ej25 car, 96 - 98, outback, forester, GT or LSi, in that order.

the GT and LSi will cause your speedo to be off.

the biggest thing is to make sure the final drive ratio matches - tranny to rear diff.

 

someone correct me if I am wrong, but the Legacy based Outback with the 2.5 should be 4.44, where a standard Legacy will more than likely be 4.11.

 

a mismatch will cause torque bind in a big hurry.

1996-1998 transmissions from a 2.5 liter engine. (OBW, LSi, GT)

 

1996-1998 transmissions from a 2.2 liter engine are the same and will work, but the final drive ratio is different.  if you swap the rear differential with it as well, it'll match the transmission final drive ratio and then you're fine.

 

2.5 liter = 4.44 final drive ratio

2.2 liter = 4.11 final drive ratio

I'm new here and new to Subarus.

 

I have a 1997 Legacy Outback 2.5 automatic AWD, and I think it needs a new transmission. The model number on the bell housing is tz102z2cba-dt.

 

I've found a japanese import transmission that I'm told will work, model number tz102z1caa-dg apparently from a 1998 Outback.

 

Does anyone know if this is correct?

 

I'm looking for a direct replacement, if possible, and I'm having some difficulty finding these model numbers online to really compare them.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i do not know.
researching JMD final drive ratios is not easy.
researching USDM ratios was not easy either 10 years ago,
but easier today.

i do not think the trans has the final drive ratio that you need, 4.44,
but again i do not know for sure.

you can use any trans, (from the usa) from any 2.5L car 96 - 98 .

(they will all have ID# that start with TZ102Z2..... except maybe the forester, but it will still swap.)
outback 96 - 98
forester 98
GT 96 - 98
LSi 96 - 97/8
in that preferred order.
outbaqck and forester are an exact match.
the GT and LSi will throw off your speedo, a little about 8%.
