EA81 enigine

how would i be able to get more power out of my 1985 Subaru Brat without tearing the whole engine part?

Even with a full tear down and high compression build, you wont get much.

Want power and reliability?   Drop a EJ22 into it.

The ea81 is stone reliable, but it is not and will never be a power house.

That said, the best simple bolt on that will help is a Weber carb.  While it doesnt increase the max power output by much, it does increase torque across the RPM range when compared to the stock hitachi carb, and is much more reliable and tunable.

i thought about doing the wrx swap but dont know how much fabricating would need to be done or if it will bolt up the same.

how hard would it be to put a turbo on it with the Weber-Carter carb?

Edited by xMcCl3llandx

You would have to fabricate a header, down pipe, turbo cooling system/lubrication system, the rest of the turbo plumbing, add boost gauge, and add a boost controller. If you turbo it your going to want a weber 32/36 since the factory option weber-carter sucks from what people tell me since it's a a one barrel carb while the factory hitachi's have 2 barrels. It would be easier just to find a ea81t motor and drop it in with the engine/dash harness especially if your ea81 is tired out but the ea81t are really hard to find especially running. Far better option would be to drop in a ej22, ej22t, or ej20t.

EJ22 is not a WRX swap.  WRX swap is completely complicated.......and the Brat trans and chassis can't hold that much power without mods.

EJ22 is a Non-turbo engine used in Impreza and Legacy.

Search "EA/EJ swap"

EJ22 swap can be done without modifying anything else in the car.   And yeilds 130 hp........about  80% increase from the EA81

You might also look at your driving habits (THIS IS NOT a SLAM against you or anyone!). These little engines make HP and Torque at slightly higher RPM's than some people might be used to. I have several EA cars. Try a test drive around town (35mph and under and leave it in second gear (if 5 spd). Try shifting at 3500-4000 rpm's or even slightly higher.

These little engines make pretty good power for what they are if they are tuned and fueled correctly. Twist it up and have some fun!

Good Luck,,,
