My ej22 is on an engine stand; and I would like to turn it upside down to install a shorten oil pan is safe to do so? Keep in mind all fluids have been drained?

Most instructions i have seen show the the RTV on the oil pan is ok to put it on the engine block instead? I feel like it would much easier to install oil pan that way.

Thank You.

Why a smaller pan? How much smaller? Will you check level consistently. Being less in qty., your oil will break down faster, so you'll have to change more often.

You can do either the block or the pan,, but since the engine is out, it's so easy to do the pan.

The choice is yours.

The shortend oil pan is from burley motorsports and its going to into 85 vanagon. http://burleysmotorsports.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=46

Is ok to turn the engine upside down? It would make my life a whole lot easier if i could. Also, I was planning on using permatex anaerobic; but i see everyone recommends ultra gray. Any objections to the anaerobic?  Any recommendation on the torque sequence for the bolts?  This is my first time doing this; so i am trying to get all my ducks in a row. Thanks.

Of course you can flip it upside down. Won't hurt a thing. Just have a catch pan under it because there is always something liquid that will run out of it.

The steel pan surface isn't flat enough to use anaerobic sealant. It will not set properly and will leak. Use RTV to get the best seal.

Make sure both surfaces are clean and oil free. Apply RTV to whichever surface you find easier. I usually apply a thin layer to the pan, then smooth it down with a finger to get it into all of the creases between the bolt holes. You don't want to over-do it and have big gobs of RTV squeeze out when the bolts are tightened.

Flip it over.  No problem.

Use Permatex "The RIght Stuff" black Adhesive RTV.

It's far superior to other RTV........assemble immediately......cures in minutes.........incredible bonding power to clean metal.  And easy to reuse since it self plugs.....then you pull out the rubbery plug and good to go.....

I would still put sealant on the pan....not the block.......since the placement of the bead on the pan is more critical (the block is flat, the pan has a groove in it)  You want the bead to lay right down the middle of that groove.

Make sure to use a good O-ring at the back where the PCV drain is......if not you will suck oily vapors into the intake though PCV.
