84 EA81 rough idle questions.

Featured Replies

So I've got an 84 EA81 wagon and it idles really rough. I recently did a weber conversion and changed the head gaskets and and there are no vacuum leaks, it still idles rough. What could be causing this?

Triple checked and can't find any vacuum leaks. Also has a new PVC valve. Idles rough above 900 rpms and won't idle at all below that. Anyone have any ideas?

Forgot to say already have new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and fuel filters. The tach jumps up and down at idle also.

Did you check the float? They get bounced around in shipping quite a bit and can get damaged. Truthfully, I've only installed two, but both were off.

In that case, remove the cap and see how much sideplay the distributor shaft has.

Should be very little.

I rebuilt the weber so I think the float is probably good. Checked the distributor and there definitely is some play when I wiggle the rotor. Not sure how much is too much though...

Anything more than barely perceptible is too much.

The reluctor air gap is only .020" maximum.

The jumping tach is a dead give away that you need new distributor bushings or a new disty.

The tach only fluctuates a couple hundred rpms so I think a rebushing should do it.
