paddler511
Howdy. I have a 96 legacy outback with 5 speed and ej22. I keep hearing a thudding type noise near the rear passenger wheel when i let the clutch out. it also makes a humming noise when I'm in 5th gear cruising along and take my foot off the accelerator. I'm thinking it might need a new wheel bearing or axle? Any ideas or help would be sweet. I have changed the tranny and rear differential fluid, but it didn't help the matter. cheers- will
MilesFox
Check for loose or failing driveshaft u-joint. Check the hanger bushing on the riear diff. In this order.Check the rear diff fluid.Go under the car and try to turn the driveshaft by hand feeling for play.
ocei77
My vote is for the hanger bushings. They wear out with age and will cause this type of noise and the gearbox engages or as the car changes speed speed rapidly. O.
