Can not get my ej22 to line up.

I've been trying to get my engine into a hatch I just recently acquired for over 3 hours. No matter how much I twist, re level or slide it will not meet up with the transmission. Am I being stupid or is there something out of my control.

The car is an 80 ea81 series hatchback that has an ej bell housing with ea push button transmission innards.

It seems like I need to remove the front clip to get it in, but am not sure if that is even an option in this car.

Did you use an alignment tool for the clutch? If you loosen the pressure plate bolts via the starter it will give you a little more wiggle room, rotate the motor to torque them back down.

The bottom studs on the engine are my main trouble

No, the only time I have ever put an engine back into a car was on my 66 ford and a forester that i changed the clutch and flywheel on.

Basically what I'm saying is any advice is good advice

Do you have the transmission jacked up at all?

+1.  if the transmission is lower than the engine, jack the transmission up.

Make sure the transmission is in gear so the splines do not move as you rotate the crank.

Removing the front Crankshaft pulley can help.

The clearance is tight.....you gotta tilt the engine a bit and rock each stud into the bell, then the rest of the way down till the front of crank clears the radiator support then the rest of the way down.
