Should I buy? 1986 GL

Featured Replies

So I'm going to look at a potential wagon after work.

Its an 86 Gl Wagon, runs and drives, 110k, asking 625.00   I see no reason in hell not to buy it?

Please talk me into or dare I say talk me out of it.

Thats what I'm thinking.  From digging around on the forum, it looks like another user was asking about this... he must of passed?

Anyways, more to follow.

im curious why it has such low mileage.  be sure everything electrical works, and is intact.  look for amateur hackjob electrical repairs too.  otherwise, if it runs and drives and isnt making any death noises...for $625, buy two!

Is it buy one get one free?

Do you have any coupons? Is there a limit of one per person?

Well, exhaust was rusted through, needed new tires all around.  battery was toast.   I didn't want to have to put 4-500 into just to get it on the road.

I had to pass

Woah!

Any old car will need a battery and tires... and exhaust leaks can usually be taken care of with a half hour of welding.

Where is the car? If you don't take it, and it's nearby, I will! :D

midwest salt took alot of it away more than the pictures indicated, oil all over too... I was hoping for a 600 turn key car to take home (which I knew wasnt likely).  anyways, I guess I'll stick to my other two project whips.

cheers.

You suck :P   That's the same one I'm looking at.  In O-town right? >_< lol

Did ya end up getting it?  How bad is it if not?  The lady told me 115k miles when I talked to her the other afternoon and that it ran and drove and would get me back to Kearney without any problems...  I've been waiting for a buddy of mine in the area to get back to me, he was gonna go check it out for me.

Are you looking for an older sube?  I'm probably gonna end up selling my 88 DL 3 door if you are interested.  I would rather have this wagon honestly and don't mind putting a bit of work into it.  95k original miles, Colorado car originally...Not pretty but runs great and has had a lot of stuff repaired that was neglected since I bought it.  Shoot me a PM if interested, lets get together if you are close by and you can check it out.  I'd also like to pick your brain on this car even more.  I'm pretty much sold on buying it, I need a wagon like yesterday.

I had to pass

Muffler and exhaust pipe  $20 used

4 good used tires @15.00 each = $60 (hand mount to rims, add small weights opposite air nozzel)

New battery $65

Total = $145 (Pic N Pull)

Corner marker lens - $10

Front grill - $10

Thats pretty much how I see it.  However I already have 3 new tires coming, can get a battery for cheaper than $65, and have a friend with a welder I can use to fix exhaust.  Someone just needs to come buy my 88 DL first ;) lol

Only problem is we don't have many pick and pulls around this area, and none of the ones I've been to have these older sube's.  Everything there is OBDII or very close to the switchover (with exception to the classic section full of 40's-60's domestics).  So basically any parts I'd need would come from forum members ;)

rusted out and wont find, says midwest obscure buyers' demographic when new and rust belt road salts, says the midwest.

I would snatch this car up. "rust free" according to the pics compared to midwest standards

Thats my plan Miles ;) I come from PA originally, try finding one of these in this shape back there...dollars to donuts its not gonna happen, they all ended up in the scrap pile from rusting out before the drivetrain died...

Get it! I just bought one  but an 88 very clean auto with 103000 miles. Paid 700. Only issues is I have to replace the drivers side turn signal lens to pass safety inspection...lol. And that's the original paint!

Well, if all goes accordingly, I may be heading to pick this up this weekend.  Meeting up tomorrow with a buyer for my 88 DL and once I get that sold I'll be on the road to grab this.  Then its time to pack her to the gills and put Nebraska in my rear view :)

Good luck. These are fantastic cars. Slow but really reliable and well built IMO. Could not believe all the compartments in the back hatch.

Well, its gone.  She sold it yesterday before I had the chance to get up there :(  Which one of you mooks snatched it out from under me?:P

All kidding aside, I'm sure the new owner will be happy :D

Damn, that looks neat. I look the way the window trims work all the way around on the flat roof GL wagons.

It doesn't quite look right on the GL high roof "Touring wagons" we got, and the flat roofs are all DLs without the extra mouldings.
