I have a 1998 legacy wagon 250T, EJ25. After driving the engine appears to give off, what I would call it as a hot smell, that's the best I can describe it. It is driving ok, seems to perform satisfactory and doesn't heat up according to the temperature gauge.

Is there anything I should be concerned about or need to get checked out? Is it something that could lead to a more serious outcome?

If it wasn't for this smell I wouldn't be at all worried about it other wise.

Any advise or suggestions is much appreciated.

Please note that the oil and water are ok. Just had new leads, plugs, knock sensor, C02 sensor, PCV valve.

Oil or power steeering leak, even a small one? Blown half shaft boot (grease on exhaust)? Stick stuck in a heat shield?

during service, some fluid may have dripped onto the exhaust.

 

check the CV joint boots for splits - maybe grease is being slung onto the exhaust.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have a small valve cover leak, which allows a tiny amount of engine oil to drip down on the exhaust system. The oil burns off causing the hot smell. My 99 OBW has done this for years. I just put up with it.
