December 13, 201411 yr Is a 2.5 dohc from a legacy with an automatic the same as a 99 dohc from an outback with a manual.
December 13, 201411 yr The 96 has different pistons and heads from any other ej25d. The 99 is different from the 97/98 models as it has a phase 2 block, crank, and rods with 97/98 pistons and heads
December 13, 201411 yr The internals are different, but you can put a 99 2.5 into a 96. You might have to use the 96 intake manifold on the 99 engine, I'm unsure there. But it will work. The 99 block has 8 bellhousing bolts as opposed to 4 on your car, just use the original 4 that are in your trans. It'll be fine. Edited December 13, 201411 yr by 987687
December 13, 201411 yr It's just the block that's phase2 in 99. It still has DOHC heads. The only way to tell the difference between phase1 and 2 blocks (besides taking them apart) is 8 bolt bellhousing on the phase2. All 99 legacy/outbacks with a 2.5 are DOHC.
December 13, 201411 yr Author It is phase 1. 4 bolt bell housing. I thought all phase 2 were single cam
December 13, 201411 yr It is phase 1. 4 bolt bell housing. I thought all phase 2 were single cam Nope, in 99 they used a phase2 block (52mm rod bearings, 8 bolt bellhousing) with phase1 pistons and heads (DOHC). From the outside this appears like a phase1 engine and can be put into earlier cars. For that matter, you can put pretty much any subaru heads on any subaru block... my 2000 outback has a 96 2.2l block with the stock 00 heads... Edited December 13, 201411 yr by 987687
December 13, 201411 yr Different internals, but its a straight drop in for the 96. The only parts you need to worry about are the same.
December 14, 201411 yr Is a (96 )2.5 dohc from a legacy with an automatic the same as a 99 dohc from an outback with a manual. as mentioned, yes, and no. are the engines identical, no. will they swap and run with no issues, yes, with conditions. like : if swapping the 99 ej25 into the 96 car, you will want ot use the 96 intake manifold on the 99 block to eliminate vac line issues. likewise, if swapping the 96 engine into a 99 car, use the 99 intake manifold on the 96 long block. it will save some headaches. the charcoal canisters are in different locations and the manifold swap will eliminate any problems.
