redrilling ea82 flywheel for ej swap questions

Featured Replies

Hi there I'm getting everything together for my first ej swap and the next objective on my list is to redrill the flywheel. I'm having a hard time though finding threads that step through it. I'm sure they exist so I'm sorry if I'm bringing up a redundant post. I've found lots of threads where people mention that they did it, but none where they show how to do it. So I have the flywheel from the ej motor to place the new holes. What kind of drill bit should I use? Am I gonna need a press for this? Also, I'm guessing I should get it balanced after redrilling? Any tips or pointers through this are appreciated, or even a link to a previous thread that goes through it if you know of one.

thanks!

you can take the ring that goes around the FlexPay plate on an EJ motor and put it on the EA flywheel with the bearing and it also that'll hold it as a stencil for you to cut out and then you just use a dremel or something to drill it out

I used an air compressor with a carbide tipped high speed drill and it worked really well. First thing i did was put my EA flywheel up and just marked with a sharpie where i thought the holes should go then went to work with it clamped in a vice. Took a couple of test fits but finally got it. I wouldn't bother getting it balanced as technically you will be taking the same amount of material out of all sides. You could, just saying i never have and i've never had a problem. I tried dremel bits before and they just kept breaking so get a heavy duty carbide bit! :)

I've got an endmill you can use/start with.......I"ve needed 2 in the past. they are about $20 bucks for the good carbide one for a dremel.  Dremel works fine just have to go slow lots of shallow cuts little by little.

Balance.....meh.

angerthis,

Just where under the hood is this connector located?

I just went to the hardware store bought a brand new colbalt bit and for the template I use the spacer from the automatic transmission that went between the crank and the flexplateq welded it to my ea82 flywheel And clamped it to a drill press and drilled them out with no problem Took my time at it as I spent maybe 4 hours only used one colbalt bit work perfectly grinded the spacer off after I was finished and done it was like 20 bucks with some change back from Lowes

The bolt patterns are very similar. So you're not drilling completely new holes, but just slotting them a bit. I shoot some paint through an EJ flexplate or flywheel onto the EA82 flywheel to get an idea, and then a high-speed cutting bit for a dremel, usually requires a couple test-fits.
