February 2, 201511 yr I would like to know if I could use the first generation FWD Impreza gearbox, with the EA71 fat case engine. Furthermore what kind of FWD 5speed gearbox I could using with the EA71 fat case. The gearbox codes of the FWD Impeza???? Edited February 2, 201511 yr by 1000 Pistes
February 2, 201511 yr They're definitely a different bolt pattern. You could probably use an EA-EJ adapter plate like is done with the ej swap though.
February 2, 201511 yr ... Furthermore what kind of FWD 5speed gearbox I could using with the EA71 fat case... FWD EA81 and FWD EA82 are closer in design to the FWD EA71 than the EJ15 / EJ16 \ EJ18 FWD impreza. Kind Regards.
February 2, 201511 yr Author Is it possible to fit the transmission(gearbox)of the EJ15- EJ16-EJ18 FWD to the fat case EA71???? Where I could find this EA-EJ adaptor???? Edited February 2, 201511 yr by 1000 Pistes
February 2, 201511 yr Is it possible to fit the transmission(gearbox)of the EJ15- EJ16-EJ18 FWD to the fat case EA71???? ... Yes! ... Where I could find this EA-EJ adaptor???? There are some USMB members who fabricate them; one of them is Scott in Bellingham, Years ago, I imported a Lift kit made by Him, from USA to Honduras, here is a Link to his Website: ~► http://www.sjrlift.com/index.php/catalog/engine-swap-parts/ej-ea-adapter-plate-detail Kind Regards.
February 2, 201511 yr Author I am a little bit confused. I have in mind to build a 1973 4Door Sedan as rally car of the era(VHC). I must use the EA71 engine(fat case) and I have to use some 5speed gearbox with the closest possible gear ratios(for rally use). To build some custom gear ratios to be used with the top starter 5speed EA71 gearbox,it is very expensive to me,with unknown success(reliability). In other hand I am searching if there is some other SUBARU FWD 5speed gearbox with close ratios to be used directly with some kind of adaptor..... Edited February 2, 201511 yr by 1000 Pistes
February 2, 201511 yr Yeah just get whatever ej transmission you want, and use an adapter Plate to attach it to your engine. You can get an adapter from a few different people on here. Check out the vendors for sale section.
February 3, 201511 yr If I'm not mistaken the EJ transmission case and an adapter isn't the solution here. There are two reasons for the adapter plate on an EJ engine to EA transmission conversion. First there is the difference in the top fasteners and the locating dowels and second the EA transmission main drive gear (input shaft) sticks out 12 or 13 mm (1/2 inch +/-) further from the front face of the transmission than it does on and EJ transmission case. I'm not familiar with the fat case as to whether it is the same as the EA81 /82 series engine rear pattern but even if it is if the adapter between the engine and EJ transmission will have the main drive gear not reaching where it would need to be. The distance of the stickout would be about an inch shorter than it should be. ymmv

So yeah, this won't work with removing an inch from the motor or tranny, if that's even possible. I know I've read about someone wanting to do it before.
February 4, 201511 yr That was the reason why I posted this: FWD EA81 and FWD EA82 are closer in design to the FWD EA71 than the EJ15 / EJ16 \ EJ18 FWD impreza. Kind Regards.
