February 13, 201511 yr Hi, My sister is looking for a reliable car in Calif, she needs something and has less than 3k so I told her about the great legacy 2.2 and said she pretty much can't go wrong. Also told her about this forum where a community actually helps each other. She is looking at a wagon, 1999 2.2 with 141k and it says only thing wrong is a power steering leak and speedometer cable not working. I was wondering where she might be able to look for the leak, and the worst it could be? If it is a rack, is that something I could do for her, I am pretty handy and have done a lot of repairs on cars. Worst case scenario, I guess she could pay someone but do the racks on these go? Any info would be appreciated! And thanks!
February 13, 201511 yr Most likely the pump which can be rebuilt or replaced. Speedo, is most likely the speed sensor on the trans. Easy to change. Could be the dash, but that's pretty easy as well. No cable, it electronic. Larry
February 13, 201511 yr Recently, had trouble with P/S fluid leak on my 98 OBW. I replaced the pump, but the leak continued. Long story, short, my rack was leaking. So, ordered a used rack from a www.carparts.com wrecking yard. I had a friend install the rack, which he said was not that bad of a job. Once installed, all is well. No more fluid leak. Later, I learned that the pump is easily rebuilt with a couple of parts from a Subie dealership. You may want to check this out first.
February 13, 201511 yr Author That's great and thankyou! Its a 99 with 141k and looks pretty nice for only $2600. (makes me think why am I not driving one of these older wagons?, they really are one of the best cars ever made) appreciate it!
February 13, 201511 yr there is a known problem with the 99 speedo. and a pretty easy fix for the right person. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/112272-99-speedo-fix/ my steering pump leak was due to the o-ring in between the reservoir and the pump. the proof was the puddle of steering fluid on top of the engine. an easy fix, $2 part and 15 minutes. the steering racks do not fail often, that is why a used one , if needed, is such a good bet. just be sure of the leak before you start spending money on parts.
