98' Outback suddenly stalls at idle

Featured Replies

Slight miss around 2000 rpm

Rough south of 1200 rpm

Stalls out, but starts right back up 900rpm or less

Only clue I have so far is I put a new air filter in , symptoms happened at next start

Replacing old filter did not Help

Did you securely clamp the airbox shut after you dropped the new filter in?

Ya , but still getting fallout from hitting a 200 pound deer on that side , it was a wrestling match, will check for leaks and tweaks , thanks

You may have broken a solder connection inside the MAF.  They are prone to problems in those years.  If possible, temp. swap one with  another car and see if your problems clear up.

I'll second the mass air flow since you had to mess with it to replace the air filter. Check the connection. Try throwing a junkyard one in its place.

Do you have a check engine light on?

If not MAF it may be coincidental time for plugs and wires.
