I have a lead on craigslist for a 95 Legacy L

It's a girl and its 1:45 mins away so I cant really ask this ...

Did they ONLY make the 2.2L that year?  That's all I want...I don't want the 2.5

I have a 96 legacy sedan(L) with the 2.2

From what I recall, the 95 did not?? have the egr pipe and the 96 does??

Is it possible if I ever needed to ...to drop the 96 into the 95

I DO NEED it to pass NY state emissions

thanks guys

From wikipedia - "There were two variations of the EJ25D sold in the US market. The engine was introduced in 1996 in the Legacy 2.5GT, LSi, and Legacy Outback."

Not trying to be mean, just saying, this probably took longer to post then to find out on the interwebz.

Model year 95 legacy was 2.2 only.

96 engine will drop in just have to use the single port y pipe that matches the heads, use the 95 intake manifold and wiring, and plug the EGR port in the head.

I understand except for one thing

if the 95 has the metal pipe running from the intake to the head......and I use the 95 intake manifold and the 96 engine...will there be a hole in the 96 head for the pipe to attach to?

Sorry if I missed something

So, you want to put the 95 engine into the 96, and your 96 has EGR?

95 will have EGR if its an automatic. That would be best case in your scenario.

sorry I confused anyone

I thought the 95 had no egr pipe and the 96 did...(both automatics)...am I wrong?

If they both have it then I am golden

I want to save the 96 engine in case I ever need to put in the 95 (which I am considering buying...its 1.5 hours away though)

If the 95 is automatic it will likely have EGR.

Keep the single port exhaust y-pipe with the 96 engine. You'll need it if you ever do the swap.

There's an easy bypass to put a non EGR motor mated to an EGR intake manifold and get no check engine light. With all the swaps going on it should probably get a sticky or a spot in the repair manual.

You just run a breather hose from that metal pipe to the air hose for the IACV. I used an extra vac hose from the valve cover and ran it to a brass T fitting from home depot. $3. fitting and 2 hose clamps and a bit of pushing and wiggling and bingo! No check engine light. Have had 2 such cars and both passed california smog check.

to summarize = no EJ25's in 1995.  It's only EJ22 and EJ18 int he impreza.

1995 auto has EGR

1995 manual does not have EGR

1996 - can have EGR or not have EGR - there's no way to know without just looking at it.

1996 engine can go in the 95 if you also swap the exhaust manifold.

If the 96 doesn't have EGR - do the work around mentioned above.
