2002 OUTBACK WAGON, BASIC L4 ENGINE, AUTO TRANSITION,DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT

Featured Replies

Hello,

My warning light goes on and off intermently. I am looking for solutions to resolve.

Which warning light, how many miles are on the car, what maintenance has been done on it

I am guessing your are referring to the check engine light. When lit, have the code read at an auto parts store. They will do that in their parking lot at no cost. The code will give you advise, as to what the problem is.

Even when not lit it should be storing that code.  Pull the code, as Rooster said, and post it, that will give us the information to help you.

420 is an O2 sensor

When was the last time this car had a tuneup?

And we need to know mileage. When was the last time the timing belt was changed (never I am guessing).

I would start with the MAP sensor issue + a tuneup and then go from there. It's possible the map sensor is causing it to run rich which is setting off the cat codes, but it does look like you have a possible bad o2 sensor as well.

And as fairtax said, how many miles and when was the last timing belt?

MILEAGE: 160K

TUNEUP: 120K

TIMING BELT CHANGED: 120K, 140K the belt self adjust part jammed, belt broke, valves jammed, had valve job done at subaru dealer.

Reset all the codes and get another reading.

What parts were replaced with the timing belt.
