Hello, I am new to this forum and need some help with my '96 Outback. I bought this wagon about 2 years ago, and it runs like a champ so i need to keep everything else in order. a few days ago i noticed i had no brake lights (tail lights work); before this the interior fan decided to slowly die out on me sparadically. The moonroof also decided to die out on me about the same time a few months ago. I mention all this because im thinking it may all be related? checked all my fuses and everything is good as well as brake light switch under pedal. All lights work so I dont know what could be wrong. Any and all help appreciated! Thank you.

If the Brake switch on the pedal is in good working order and its wirings are alright, then I kindly suggest you to check the Fuse Box for Overheating and / or loose \ melted contacts, because if several electrical components are failing at once, sounds like the problem might be at their power source.

Is there power at the brake switch ? is it passing the power thru ? Do you have a signal (power) at the back of the car when applying the pedal ?  Sometimes the bulb socket will quit working on some functions and not others, unplug and check the wiring for signals just before the bulb socket. If your not getting a signal at the back then do as jes suggested and inspect the fuse blocks for bad connections.  

These are not likely related or they would have all stopped working at the same time.

 

The brake light switch is a dual contact switch used for the brake lights and cruise control. The brake lights will use the two larger wires going into the switch. Check for 12v going in and leaving the switch on the large wires.

You can also jumper the two large wires in the plug and see if the lights come on.

 

The blower fan is under the dash on the passenger side. You can see the end of the motor sticking down in the corner below the glove box. If the fan isn't working, turn the key and can switch on and smack the bottom of the fan motor with a screwdriver handle and see if it turns on. If it does, the brushes in the fan motor are worn or stuck and the fan motor just needs to be replaced.
