does anyone know what fluid goes in the 5 speed dual range 4wd manual transmission? its out of an 88 GL. i accidentally spilled most of the fluid while the transmission was disconnected.

75w90 is what factory recommends i'm running carquests 85w140 in mine right now.

That's pretty heavy for your transmission.   I've bought the 75w-multi at NAPA several times.  Works great.  Subaru needs a lighter weight fluid than 90 weight.

Really depends on the climate for which viscosity you need

75w-90 is fine, just make sure you get a GL-5 rated gear oil otherwise your diff will be destroyed.
