Relocating to Reno Nevada...

Featured Replies

Just a thought. There seems to be ALOT of Subaru folk sprouting up from NV, and Im getting tired of living in California. It'd be logical given its only 2 hours away from Sac. where the parents & friends are.

Some questions I have though are:

1) What is the housing like up there? Prices and availability. Apartments are a No... no.... Duplex's & homes or pretty much anything with a garage and parking for 2 more.

2) How is the Job market up there? I wouldnt feel comfortable working for a Casino, or McDonalds or anything... but what about other business's? Are there any large business's based out of Reno?

and 3) Hows the General living up there? Does the gambling in Reno add to the crime rate or anything crazy? I love the place, expecially closer to Tahoe and Truckee :)

Thanks Guys

-Brian

Brian, i had some friends move there from school and a couple of them worked for the 1-800 munbers for an air line and it was hunky-dory from what they said and Reno is always cool to visit

Cool. Im going to search for call-centers. That seems to be the type of work I feel most comfortable doing. Do you remember the name of the company they worked for?

My sis and her hubby live there, the cost of living sounds OK from what they tell me. And from what they say the crime rate isn't so bad (I thought it would be  )

Housing is all right, I know that they are rising though because of all you Bay area and Sac town Peeps are coming in drones! Reno was like in the top 25 for business growth so I don't think that work would be a problem. You could work in the summit warehouse so you could hook us all up!;) Whatever you want though.

If you were interested in a 30 minute commute, Carson City is more affordable. 10 minutes more (east), Dayton is downright cheap.

Both are "catching up" to Reno, though.

IIRC, Drano does have some "call centers", SBC (aka Nevada Bell), comes to mind. Lots of warehouse and manufacturing too..IGT (huge slot machine manufacturer) is a biggie.

Ya, im putting in an application for IGT, scott over at SECCS works there. Reno seems to be the new Sac, IE all the Bay area/ expensive realstate people are seeing that its a good place to move too yet still close to california. Plus the air is better from what everyone says :P

Brian , i think it was 800-RENO-AIR, yeah i'm pretty surethat is what it was. She loved working for them. Goodluck in the search

Well Brian you wanna move to Reno huh??? It's a nice place to be somewhat. Your close to the mountains, Tahoe, the desert, night life, shopping.. etc. It's all pretty much here.

If you like trees, dont move here. If you like shade, dont move here. If you like rain... well don't move here. hehe

Our weather is quite different then yours in sac. A bit colder in the winter. It did get down to -4 this year. And we do get some snow. The summers are hot but mild compared to Sac. A few years ago we had a all time record high of 107. Hottest it's ever been. But it's a very dry climate.

Housing and apartment costs seem way to high to me. And they keep rising fast. Peoples income and housing prices don't make much sense to me? One bedroom apartments are running around $600-900 a month. Housing $225,000 on average. Yuppie parts of town would be Northwest, and southwest, and south (Galena). Pretty much the outskirts of town. Everywhere else seems to be affordable. Like where I live in the North Valleys. :)

Jobs….. no problem, we have a great economy. Check our local news paper for jobs and housing http://www.rgj.com ( Reno Gazette Journal )

We are the 2nd fastest growing city in the country which makes it kinda unnerving. Every time I see a new housing development it makes me wanna cry. Our streets and highways just can't seem to keep up. Road construction is a never-ending battle. The peoples demeanor is changing also. Northern Nevada is the truck and SUV capital of the country also. Lot's of red necks like to run you off the road.

If I could delete the people and the town, I just love the country up here. It's absolutely beautiful sometimes!!

I would stay away from Carson City if I were you. They are very protective of there town and don't take to kindly to outsiders.

Good luck dude!

Oh and watch out for those ea81’s, Reno is at 4500 feet. The altitude likes to suck the life right out of them.

4500 ft means nothing to a EJ22T :) Thanks Jeremy, thats just what I needed to hear. I cannot stand the weather here in California. I also dont like the roads (you think your roads are bad???). I'll be looking in your local paper as well for some openings. I heard JB lives real close to you as well? Maybe i'll have to come by sometime and checkout the area.
