How do I adjust my clutch. Is that the problem?

Featured Replies

I am a subie newbie. I just got a 94 Impreza L wagon. The clutch seems stiff and close to the floor. Doesn't slip. Is there a way to adjust it?

There should be an adjustment at the clutch fork under the hood. If its a cable that is, I'm not sure of that year. If it is hydrolic there is no adjustment it probably needs to be bleed. If you aren't getting disengagement of the clutch a few inches above the floor adjustment is probably neccissary. I would start saving up for a new clutch though you are probably getting close to the end of the clutch life if your pedals that low.

As the clutch wears the release point moves higher

Somebody probably adjusted it close to the floor because they liked it that way.

Clutch release lever sticks out the top of the trans on the drivers side. Clutch cable is on top. Should be a 12mm adjusting nut and a 10mm lock nut. Adjust free play of the release lever to about 1/4".

It should have a hill holder which is the smaller cable beneath the clutch cable. After adjusting the clutch cable, adjust the holder cable until it just barely starts to pull the lever on the holder mechanism.

Let me add that also, when the Clutch cable is about to Break, it stretch a little enough to provide the symptoms you described; so, if the adjustment fails, maybe it is time for a new Cable; especially if the one on your '94 impreza is the original one...

Hey guys problem solved! I adjusted the clutch cable underneath the hood. My pedal now engages higher of the ground and fully. Just needed to be tightened a little bit. Thanks again for the help.
