Ea81 to 98 2.5l swap?

Featured Replies

Ok let me start by saying if this is in the wrong place please move it. Thanks. Next i just purchased a 1985 GL 2dr hatchback with this ea81 OHV engine that i cannot locate any parts for so i have been looking into doing a full swap. I was originally thinking a 2.2l but i found a 98 outback with the 2.5l and manual trans for a good price so my real questions are...

1. Are there any engine bay problems i may run into when installing the 2.5l?(like not enough room?)

2. Will i be able to use the stock 85 drive shafts or do i need custom ones since i believe the outbacks will be too long?

3. Will the outbacks crossmembers swap over into the 85 gl?

Ive been all over google which is how i found this forum and i havnt actually found anything about the swap into a GL hatch. Any help is appreciated.

It would be lots easier and cheaper to just buy the entire outback and run it. You have some serious reading to do. All of information is here on this site if you search for it.

Does a cheap EJ25 in what is typically a high priced Subaru area sound suspect - headgasket or previously overheated?

Check out some of the EJ swap threads.

Engine im sure has blown headgaskets but ive got a good 2.2l sitting on a pallet at my job and if the bottom end of the 2.5l is still good i was thinking about putting the 2.2l heads on it.
