96 Legacy outback AWD wagon(2.5L AT) binding problem need to replace transfer case solenoid

Featured Replies

Hi ALL:

My 1996 Legacy outback AWD wagon(2.5L AT) has binding problem, which need to replace "transfer case solenoid" for sure.

Have this issue so for several years, plan to change and do this job by myself at end of this year and save money for chrismas.

Have anyone done this job before or have any experience comments??????

My big concern!!!!!!! is, since the "transfer case solenoid" was located at the rear of the transmission.

So should i need to pull the whole transmission(that big part) out ???????           or    the rear  t-case can be easily removed...????

Hope some one can give me some tips before i can get start.

Thanks a lot.

Nope you shouldnt have to pull the whole trans out. The exhaust, and driveshaft yes. Then remove the back cover. The solenoid will be the only one in there. Watch the wires going back together, as they are easy to pinch when you put the cover back on.

96 the solenoid stays with the removed housing (I think), so be ready to unplug the wire to it while supporting the case.

removed housing??? Well, I check the youtube vedio said, there is an wire connect the rear case and front when release the back rear case from the big part of the Transmisson.

Did you mean that?? or ??

He means the solenoid is attached to the rear cover. Its a bit heavy, so dont drop it because the wires are attached to it.
