January 11, 201610 yr For starters 2004 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 2.5L So a while ago a mechanic told me my boot was torn and he was correct, but I did not replace it at the time they just repacked it since I did not drive the car that often. It would make a popping noise when turning Right (normally when I accelerated through the turn). I should have addressed it earlier but did not since I didnt drive the car that much and had other things to spend money on. I finally got around to replacing it and got the part (see below) from O'reilly's, I think it was the right part the inner joint cylinder was a hexagon shape not round. Assuming it was the right part since they didnt look completely similar (same length but slight differences. Gear on the outer joint seemed a bit wider than the original.) the one i bought was re-manufactured. At first this seemed to fix things and I felt good about it. When I turned and accelerated through turns there was no more popping. However, the next day when I was turning Right again (and this was the passenger side I did the work on) making a somewhat fast turn and accelerating at the same time I heard about three pops though not as sharp as before and the check engine light flashed about 10 times before turning off. I was about 4 blocks from home so I drove back and parked it with no more CEL warnings. In all the time I dealt with the previous popping there was never any problem with CEL warning. I have not taken it up to Autozone or anything to get the code but will after work. I was throwing it out there for help on what to look for. It was dark but I did not really see any fluid leaking at the inner joint connection. Thanks for any help. January 11, 201610 yr make sure the inner joint's spline is fully popped into the differential. get the CEL code read and post it here - might still be stored in the ECU.
January 11, 201610 yr Aftermarket axles are notorious for being poor quality. A flashing CEL generally indicates the engine is misfiring, not likely to be anything related to the axle. How old are the spark plugs and wires?
January 12, 201610 yr Recently I checked around for cv axles, and the super quality ones have greater tolerances for stresses. As usual do your online research on quality levels, it doesn't hurt to check feedback on O'Reilly or other auto parts stores online, to see what other people have gone through with them. I know Auto Zone quality level tends to be substandard.
January 12, 201610 yr What I do typically is buy the new axels, not reman. You will know their new of they don't ask for your old Axel as a core. EMPI makes the best aftermarket C.V. axels IMHO. Unfortunately EMPI is no longer in business, But you can still get old stock from most online retailers.
