Sudden loss of power, 91 loyale

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got a 91 loyale 5 speed. A couple weeks ago I was coming back from school late one night and all of a sudden it had absolutely no power.  I started stalling just to get up a hill.  Well I finally got it on a flat it could only go about 45 mph and not go into 5th at all.  I thought for sure a head gasket must have blown but the oil looks fine.  Took it to a mechanic and he said the fuel pressure was 2 psi...could the fuel pump be shot?  Seems weird that it would go out all of a sudden.  Help!

Thanks,

Bobby

nothing weird, nothing all of a sudden. the fuel pump has been wearing out the past 25 years and now finally the ea82 has called it quits - not gonna continue at an appalling 2 psi.

ask your mechanic to bet his boys on it ! you may need to replace a few other service items while there. Have him do a compression test first, maybe new plugs leads and cap n rotor, fuel filter oil filter change ....

It is supposed to be making something more like 25psi. Running at all on 2 is pretty good. A blown headgasket bad enough to cause loss of power would likely be making quite a smoke show - just guessing, because I have never had one that blown.

Ok thanks. I've been reading that you can put a fuel pump from a late 80s ford f150 on there and do fine.  Does anyone have experience with that? They seem to cost 25 vs 200 bucks!
