I bought a 92 loyale last week for $425 the car runs excellent but last night out of nowhere it stopped working in drive I managed to get it home with only first and second and it seemed to be emitting a quiet high pitched mechanical whine after some research on here I found the stuff about the governor my question is are these symptoms consistant with a governor or does it sound like a more serious problem I didn't find anything mentioning the noise which is why I'm posting. Sounds very consistent with that. Read up on how to remove the governor hear gear and inspect it for uneven wear. If I remember correctly, it's pretty easy to get to, remove, and inspect/replace.

Thanks I'm going to check it out shortly I'll probably do a fluid and filter too can't hurt. Is that a dealer only part? Or?

so i pulled the governor the gear has stripped teeth im going to napa to try and order a new one

Find the metal upgrade gear. They made them and somewhere I'm sure there's one out there for sale.

Mine was metal.... Going to see if the local dealer can still get it.

How many miles on that metal gear you're tossing?
