XT Heads

Featured Replies

Firstly hello, new to here and I own a 1989 XT Coupe AWD 1.8 Turbo.

Can I indulge this forum please?

The heads on my car a cracked on both pair.  They have been repaired before.  I'm looking for alternatives to this problem.

Because I will be racing this car, I cant switch to twin cam heads.  I intend to run on EA85 fuel, use ceramic coating where possible.  While I have to run original turbo housing, we can go beserk with the internals.  There are many freedoms I can work with for the Bock and heads, including steel crankshaft.

My question are these

1) My heads are Gen 2 EA82 - If I can locate, are the gen 3 heads any better and why if so?

2) I saw mods done to EA82 heads some time ago, claiming water passage around exhaust is restricted?  He made changes (plus bigger valves abd port and polish) but don't know if they worked?  Can anyone throw any light on that?

3) This may qualify for looney question of the year, however, I have a good reason for asking.  Is it at all possible, to fit cam tower from EA82 onto EA81 heads with mods/machining???

Thanks in advance

Welcome!

Your best and easiest bet, is to find a set of Gen 3 EA82 heads. Those have thicker casting on the weaker areas.

The twin cam, 16 valves' Heads for the EA82 are only available in New Zealand, intended for aircraft purposes, they're very expensive and rare...

Kind Regards.
