Remember to Search as this is covered on here, and you'll find the info on other Subie sites too.

 

1990-91 are 4.11 FD Ratio, same as the '95-'98 EJ22-equipped Subaru Legacy and Impreza. It is plug-n-play w/the TCU (trans computer) so no need to change it.

 

You could also use the '96-'98 EJ25-equipped Subarus, but you'll need the matching 4.44 FD ratio rear diff.

those 1990's had a clogging ATF line issue.  Subaru provided a kit for remedying that situation. 

make sure you don't have that $20 fix on your hand first before looking into a transmission.

i did drain  and change the fluid twice  never pulled the pan  wont shift out of 1st unless you feather the gas  or push the manual button then shifts normally .I think reading man button locks out 1st an od  once out of 1st man button  off      it shifts normally thru gears  and into od  but it doesn't engage  i guess the right word   does have 285k on it
