1990 2.2

Featured Replies

Can a 2.2 from a 1990 legacy be used in a 98 Forester. I have an intake from a 98 2.2.

Asside from that intake manifold you need to use the newer style crank and cam sensors. They're the same part for both. You can use them off the forester engine if you manage in getting them out without breaking them. You might also have to use the original knock sensor, I can't remember if they changed the plug. I think you'll also need to use the forester coolant temp sensor in the 2.2, just swap it between the engines.

It's a fairly simple swap.

Cool. Thank you. Picking up the new motor tomorrow and doing the swap on Saturday

If the knock sensor plug doesn't fit, you can take a needle or safety pin and pull the wire while depressing the inner white tab of the spade connector and the plug will come off. Then it will plug right into the new one. Early 90s have a single wire plug and older 90s have a duel wire plug but with just one wire in it.

EGR - link...non-issue, unless your '98 intake doesn't have it either....then you'll have a CEL.

I believe the difference in Cam/Crank sensors is the older style were all one piece - sensor+wire/harness+plug?

Newer style had a plug connector on the sensor....I don't know if they're interchangeable.....Edit...No..see below.

And if the '90 has a KS it's likely cracked so reuse the Forester's. It should plug in to the '98 intake's harness (you got one w/the wiring harness attached? If not, I'm fairly sure the Forester's will work).

The cam/crank sensors are a different type. I think one is variable reluctance and the other is hall effect, either way, they're not compatible and must be changed.

So, it sounds like if I use my 98 intake with egr, pull the egr plug out of the 2.2 head, then swap various sensors to match the 98 intake wiring. For the most part, I should be fine.

There is no EGR plug in the 2.2 head... You can drill a hole, if you wanted. The other option is to use my EGR mod, which is to run the EGR line to the intake post-MAF. Someone did a really nice writeup on it in the USRM.

Well, I'm not sure what year the motor is then. It has an egr plug, so I guess it's a 95
