2001 AT Forester L today while driving I tried to put the car in reverse.

It would not shift to reverse.

Now the car is locked in P, the ignition key will turn, all dash instruments light up, brake lights do come on with pedal depressed, car will not
start. I can over ride P move shift to N, key will turn in ignition but car will not start

hmmm...try locking and unlocking the car with the fob.

 

also, try 'popping' the brake pedal - quick step-on/step-off - a coupla times.

Sounds like a malfunction in the park lockout. Good suggestions from 1 lucky Texan.

 

I would also suggest checking the wires and connections to the brake pedal switch even though the brake lights are working.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran out of time and further diagnostic knowledge so I jumped the starter to get the car to a garage.

Thanks for the suggestions. Turns out the issue was the shift cable broke.
