WTB front diff or ring/pinion gears

Featured Replies

I saw another section for sale stuff, but it looked mostly like vendor stuff. If you read my post about the mystery thumping noise, then you know I have teeth missing from the ring gear. I'm having a hell of a time locating the ring and pinion set (other than like $450 from dealer). Id rather not have to buy a whole trans because the trans I have shifts perfectly. Does anyone have a good 4eat (3.7 ratio), a front diff, or just ring and pinion set for sale? Or do you know where I can get one? It's for a 92 FWD wagon non-turbo. Much appreciated

I have the ring gear and it's assembly (spider gears) from a 2006 Legacy 5MT. I know it's a MUCH newer car... But subaru re-purposes parts a lot... It's a 2.5L non-turbo..... Probably won't work but throwing it out there!

Looked at parts.subaru and it fits some an legacy back to 91'

I just happen to have a FWD 4EAT pulled from a 94 Legacy probably 12 years ago. Been sitting in a shed all these years. Mileage somewhere around 88K if I remember correctly. PM me if interested.

Get that one from John.

Swapping front diffs is a beast of a job due to backlash settings (requiring dial guages) and setting bearing preload. Gloyale is the only member here I know of that's done it or talked about it and he does this everyday and is well versed in Subarus and transmission guts.

If you're going to do it best to swap the entire front behousing and retain all the same clearances precisely. Then you can swap without doing any backlash or preload adjustments.

That was my plan, to just take entire bellhousing and swap it out.
