XT n/a spider intake upgrades

Featured Replies

So i'm thinking about doing some minor mods to my xt, just wondering if i'm on the right track.

Ill be doing an exhaust, catback. A glasspack in the midpipe, and a good muffler at the back with 2" pipe.

An adjustable fuel pressure regulator with a walbro 255 pump so i can add fuel. Then bump the timing up to take advantage of the extra fuel.

A true cold air intake mostly to smooth airflow and get rid of the accordion pipe.

I'm not expecting huge gains, maybe 3-5hp.

Anyone taken a similar path? Will the ecu freak out?

have at it, it won't freak out.

kevin dyno'ed some XT6 tweaking with ignition timing and intake modifications years ago at subaruxt.com.  i think he got the most gains from advancing timing and running higher octane.  i think he recorded a net loss or no gains with the intake, so he was trying to isolate it so it wasn't drawing in hot engine air?  that's 10 year old memory, i assume his posts are still somewhere?

NA? If so, there's some gains to be made by redoing the front pipes off the engine.

The merge isn't that great shape.

Getting rid of the factory airbox would make the biggest gain.

I haven't completed it yet, but the airbox from a late 90s Legacy (has the pipe come out 45 degrees backward) I've got fitted to my 88 wagon. I've needed to cut out the bracket behind the headlight which supports the airbox & charcoal canister (luckily RHD car don't have the aircon receiver/dryer bolted to this).

I have the timing advanced to the point of requiring premium now. It does not like regular at all now. Im hoping with a fuel pressure bump i can add a little more timing.

I could redo the headpipes, but i really dont want the expense of new cats. I'm on a budget, but i have some spare cash to invest.

I'd like to keep my mods simple, and reliable.
