1986 gl 4 inch lift strut problems

Featured Replies

I have a  1986  gl wagon , 4x4, 4 inch lift .  15 inch steel chevy redrilled rims .  my struts keep blowing in 4k miles  average driving .  im using  new  gr2 gas inserts .    my coil  springs are stock  and kind of weak .  can a weak spring cause this .?   I know a lot of Guys  running a lot heavier tires than I am .  This is the second set  in less than 1 year  10k miles .

I  am going to try the Jezek  mod .   kia  sephia  front springs ,  and new  gr2  struts.   getting expensive .

bump stops?

I'm assuming they're bottoming out, and don't have bump stops. That's about the only thing that I can think of that would wreck them so quickly.

should I install the rubber  bumper  ?   I would think with new  heavier springs  it would not bottom out.

If you have worn springs and no bump stops, you are ruining your struts.

You are correct, you probably won't need them with stiffer springs, but it's a good idea to prevent strut failure.

I think the combination of  heavier tires , bad roads,  bad springs  , no rubber snubbers ,  and crazy teen drivers .  caused them to prematurely fail .  thanks  everyone   for the reply's..
