March 10, 20179 yr Often, I'm the one answering these questions but this car is new enough that I'm not as familiar. Picked up an 05 Outback with a blown Automatic trans on the cheap that I'll probably turn into my new DD/light trail driver. Car-part.com only lists 05 outbacks on the searches. i know the prior generation body style ended in 04 but have no idea where the phase 2 4eat ends and anything else begins. I assume the foresters still had the same final drive as outbacks but not much to go off of. Anyone know what the compatibility of years/models for this one should be? March 12, 20179 yr Author Federal emissions, non turbo, EJ25 SOHC with automatic trans - sucker has about 270k on it but running well. No sign of head gaskets leaking. Will give it fresh timing kit and probably seals. Looking forward to having over 300k on the odometer again like our 2000 outback a couple years ago. I've played around putting 95-98 stuff together and 99-02ish after that I'm lost on compatibility.
March 22, 20179 yr Author Bump. Anyone? I have some leads on a couple so it's not pressing. Mostly curious at this point as this generation is now old enough that used motor/trans etc. compatibility is more relevant. Saw my first one in a junk yard last fall.
March 23, 20179 yr In the same boat....RE: the same lack of info on '00+ stuff. Per cars101.com and the OM, there were both the 4-speed and 5-speed 'sportshift' models avl. that year. It looks like the 2.5i models got only the 4-speed? The XT(urbo) and 3.0's got the 5-speed...that right there is 'new(s) to me'..thought they all got the 5-speed for '05+. Perusing car-part.com does confirm only the '05 interchange....but there are a lot of them out there....is that a good thing or bad? :-0 Didn't check Ebait's offerings and interchange. If I could only find an '04 or '06, I'd try it - after comparing the wiring diagrams in an FSM and the AT wiring harnesses - ,and only if you got a good deal and have nothing better to do than swap transmissions. :-) Stay from any VDC version, too.
