My '96 Subaru Outback Legacy needs a front ujoint replacement. I've

done some research and it looks like I'll need to replace the whole
front driveshaft, unless I want to take it to a driveshaft shop. I'm
opting for a used part, as the car has 290K on it. Does anyone know what other
years/models can I pull one from besides 96 outback? It's a manual
transmission with 2.2L engine.

Transmission sets the length so you need to get one from a manual trans.  

 

1995-1998 manual transmission driveshafts.

legacy/outback for sure and I'm almost positive impreza's also swap as long as it's a manual transmission. 

1999 outbacks and legacy's with 2.5 liter engine as well.

 

You can look up your driveshaft on car-part.com and scroll through which years to see which interchange as well. or check ebay. 

 

(other 1999 vehicles may work as well but that's a Phase II transition year so I don't want to promise it, someone else will know for sure if needed)

Has to be from a 96-99 Legacy Outback with manual trans.

 

You can make one work from a Legacy L, Base, or GT model with a manual trans, but the center carrier bearing is different on those and sits higher up. You will have to install spacers and use longer bolts to bring the carrier down where it's supposed to be.
