what year and type (gl, dl, wagon, sedan,ect.) will interchange with a 88 dl wagon front brake caliper and holder?

The 1988 DL/GL wagon is considered the 3rd generation, where the DL is a cheaper trim with roll up windows, and the GL is a higher trim line with all electric windows, locks and mirrors.

 

All Front Brake Calipers (and holders) between GLs, DLs, Loyales and both sedans and wagons will fit each other from 1985 to 1994.  

 

Impreza and Legacy will not fit.

If you are looking for better brakes a complete overhaul is worth the effort. Do caliper kits, new rotors and pads, all hoses, new shoes, machine drums and lubricate pivot points.

You may have got an EA81 caliper.  Possible if someone puts a EA81 knuckle on an EA82 car.  Works but isn't correct.

yeah, they are too small. I had to cut the old ones off.
