1998 outback won't start in park

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says. It starts in Neutral but won't start in park. it is very cold outside could that effect anything?

My guess... Ice buildup at the selector switch keeping it from traveling all the way into park.

Neutral safety switch?

I haven't had an auto matic in years.......    but, that would be my inclination.

how can i bypass the switch so it can start in any gear? im not stupid i know not to start it in gear i just dont want to keep having to putting it in neutral to start it or worst yet have it not start in either park or neutral

Mine is doing the same thing, but the large solenoid to disengage park quit working (at exactly the same time), so that means getting it out of park, then popping in neutral. Thankfully, neutral starting has been reliable.

With that said, 1 time since this started happening, the solenoid worked and it actually started in park. I've tried manually working the solenoid with key set to crank, and no luck. Unsure if coincidence or not.
