1998 Legacy / Outback - 5 speed transmission compatibility

Featured Replies

Hey everyone thanks for stoping by to verify that the Subaru service tech is accurate- he says that there is a 99.9% chance that the 1998 Legacy wagon and Outback has the same 5 speed manual transmission.....

Please leave your vote if this is true or false?

In the morning I will go and harvest the transmission my friend just found for me.

The story is that the owner left the window open and a bear crawled in and destroyed the interior. The vehicle was in perfect working order at the time so i am scoring the vehicle for the cost of hauling it away so I can improve the longevity of my 20 year old beast!

The engine has already been removed so any tips on a quick removal of the tranny will be appreciated as I don’t own a Haynes....

all the best,

johnny

While physically the same and it will bolt in there are potential differences in gear ratios, speedo drive gear and most importantly the diff ratio.

These differences are due to the outback having a larger diametre tyre than the legacy.

But it'll bolt in no worries ;) Just swap in the rear diff or split the two boxes and swap the gearbox diff ratio (would be easier to source a good working order replacement outback gearbox)

Thanks bro.... sounds good and I am sure my mechanic would know best with swapping the two boxes... all the best and thanks again for the quick and quality reply in content.

I totally agree with MT!

Looks wicked! How did you get the paint to look like that or is it a vinyl wrap?

Cheers

Thanks brothers, it turns out I am going to pull as much as I can from this new vehicle to build the ultimate Legacy Wagon Remix...

with parts from a

Legacy wagon GT, and Outback,  mounted on Legacy Briton
