January 31, 20206 yr Hi guys, I am trying to do a tune-up on my 98 Legacy outback & ordered a wireset & coil from Rock Auto months ago. Finally went to put it in & it was all wrong. I thought it must be a mistake so went down to Napa to get the correct set & the one the pulled up is the same as Rock Auto. Now this is obviously wrong - the coil on my 98 has the female sockets for the plug wires & even the bolt pattern is different than the one I got on Rock Auto so it wasn't just a coil swap. My ID plate says 98' EJ25D which seems correct... Any ideas? ... What gives?
February 1, 20206 yr Engine has been swapped. Get a 1995 legacy EJ22 coil. Post a picture of the engine and we can tell for sure and guess what engine it is Take one top pick and one of the exhaust coming off the bottom of the engine. Plug wires may be wrong too because EJ22 plugs won’t work and if it’s an EJ25 the valve cover gaskets changed between 1996 and 1998 necessitating different wires I think as well Edited February 1, 20206 yr by idosubaru

February 1, 20206 yr First off - don't replace a working OEM coil pack. ESPECIALLY with some aftermarket garbage. They almost never fail and aftermarket one's do. A tune up doesn't include the coil unless it's not working or damaged. Second - do you have an EJ25 or an EJ22? Pics of the heads and timing belt covers please. February 1, 20206 yr Author Gotcha GD, Will not replace that coil. I think looking at the wires it is an early 96 EJ25 but here are some pics of the engine & passenger side heads...Also the tranny numbers match so probably not an EJ22?
February 1, 20206 yr That’s an EJ25. I can’t tell if that’s early EJ25 or not They have more squarish plug holes and 97+ has more rounded but I can’t tell from the pic Trans doesn’t matter. EJ22 bolts right up to the trans. Edited February 1, 20206 yr by idosubaru
February 2, 20206 yr Based on coil, manifold, and valve covers, it can only be a 97 engine. 98/99 use the male coil, 96 has different valve covers. Get NGK wires. New laser platinum plugs. Coil should be fine. It's a Diamond. Those are excellent coil packs. GD
