85 xt turbo auto- 02 WRX Engine SWAP 5spd conv

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

Old Subie guy from the lost days.   Just started a 85 xt turbo conversion/swap.   I have a 02 WRX Donor car with complete drivetrain and harness.   I have the motor pulled as of this week and currently working on removing the complete harness out of the wrx.   I've researched and looked and currently have a few questions that I am hoping some of you can answer.

I know the front lower control arms will  need to be opened up or swapped with xt6 lower control arms which are getting hard to find, the upper strut tower needs to be opened, and xt6 tie rod ends

the rear is where i am confused.  I understand the shock/struts but the 5 lug conversion is where i am confused as the wrx parts are not of use.  I have read numerous posts that do not actually list what you need  - do i need the trailering arms as well as the hubs/bearings/brakes/back plate/caliper? or is it just the rotor, hub and caliper with back plate?

next is the 5 speed swap....  parts listed say the xt6 trans mount front rear and center wrx....but which mounts the auto or manual ones from an xt6....   I am looking at pedal box from xt/xt6 or can i convert the wrx box over?  I have figured a few ways of moving the clutch slave over but the pedal box is a loss to me and have seen many 5 spd swaps.

last would be the actual WRX down pipe....i know the exhaust will need to be sorted but can you use a wrx down pipe to get started with.

My ultimate goal is to have the drivetrain as much possible being from the WRX.... I know there are a few things that will not work but with everyones knowledge and trial and error over the years any and all input that can help would be great!!

Thank you Harry

Rear brakes you’ll need the backing plate and the most important piece - the EA 5 stud hub.

The rest can be worked out if it doesn’t directly fit - eg, WRX backing plate adapted to the EA swing arm.

WRX dump pipe should fit no worries - one way to find out since you have the dump already.

Cheers

Bennie

Thank you for the input!!!

So the EA 5 Stud hub you mean the actual 5 lug hub that presses into the wheel bearing?

Thanks

Harry

Not having done it or even seen an XT6 but you source XT6  5 stud rear disc brakes I believe.

Always seems to be an XT6 for sale NOT ANYWHERE  near me or Bennie

Just the 5 stud hub that mounts on the stub axle.

Meh, don’t need them Steptoe, Plans are in the wings for another production run of these hubs from Australia from what I’ve here. So local to us and is the key ingredient needed for the 5 stud conversion.
