July 20, 200421 yr The car: 89 4x4 GL wagon The Question: How long can you keep driving the car with the rear axle clicking and clunking away? Kind of need to keep it rolling until the new one gets here. Thanks to all who respond and even those that don't :-\
July 20, 200421 yr Just remove the rear axle - two roll pins, and they slide right off (except for the rust of course). You don't need it to drive in 2WD. GD
July 20, 200421 yr Author Thanks GD To get the roll pins out...do you use a punch? What is an easy way to get them out? Or a hard way...as has been every thing with this car from day one
July 20, 200421 yr Yeah - 3/16" pin punch, or an appropriate sized drill bit - but watch out as they explode if the pin doesn't come out easy. I've had drill bit bits embedded in my hand - that's the day I invested $8 in a real punch..... GD
July 22, 200421 yr Author OK...I have read all the threads I could find on just how to get the rear axle off. Witch was not many, maybe not searching for the right thing. Anyway...I have the 2 pins out...now what? Are there any other parts that need to be removed before I start beating on this thing? Do I need to drop the diff? Not sure I understand just how this comes off. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks
July 23, 200421 yr Start beating. You might have to disconnect the lower coil-over mount to get enough angle, but that's it. Dropping the diff is not necessary. GD
