Sooby Doo Posted July 30, 2004 Share Posted July 30, 2004 have been running around town for two days, here is what i have found all 4x4 subs from 78-91 (exept justy legacy) have a replacement wheel bearing that is a double taper, $53 to $83 part# GRW-142 bearing # CRI 0685 pulling the old ones no problem, get 1 5/8 and 1 1/2 socket tap the inner race out with punch use 1 1/2 socket to tap out the outer race use 1 5/8 socket to tap new bearing assembly back in tighten spindle nut even found sealed front bearings for $26 open was $17 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
s'ko Posted July 30, 2004 Share Posted July 30, 2004 I have only done this once a few months ago so some of it may be wrong. THIS IS FOR AN EA81 so nut sure if it applies to EA82 TOOLS 1) Hardened punch set 2) hammer 3) axle nut socket or large pipe wrench 4) screwdrivers 5) 2x4 6) new bearing 7) new bearing grease seals 8) Bearing grease 9) Gloves.... or lots of soap and hand cleaner. 1) Remove the pin on axle nut and loosen the nut. 2) Remove the wheel. 3) Punch out the pins at the diff and the wheel on the axle drive shaft. 4) Look at the wheel assembly. When the axle drive shaft is remove there will be what looks like a washer w/4 notches on it. This has to be unscrewed. You will probably see that the metal rim has been hammer into one of the notches. You have to straighten this before you attempt to remove it. Common term for this is "UNSTAKE THE NUT" I had a hard time doing this. Once the metal is clear, take a punch and slowly tap the ring counterclock-wise using the notches. 5) Remove grease seals 5) Remove the axle nut. Take 2x4 and hold it against the outside of the axle. Hammer away. 6) W/the axle piece removed, take the punches and tap the bearing assembly lightly until it comes off. 7) Get new bearing and grease the puppy up. Assemble it onto the new axle. 8) Re-install the axle. I think I did it from the back but I can't remember. 9) Put grease seals in place 10) Put the ring nut in place. Per "How to keep your Soob alive" tighten it up as much as it will go and then back it out a little bit. (might want to check on that one w/others) 11) "Re-stake" the ring nut 12) re-install axle nut. 13) re-install axle drive shaft 14) re-install wheel. That should be it.
