strange shifting Question

Recommended Posts

I replaced all the front engine stuff T-belts,seals,and what not. Never touched any thing on the back of the engine and when I went to shift into reverse,I got grinding. I shut the engine off, pushed in the clutch,it felt normal, put it in reverse, and started the engine. It worked fine! I drove it and all was OK. Then it happned again. Did I bump somthing? or is somthing just wearing out?

you are making sure youre completely stopped before throwing it in rev, right?watch the rpms while you shift, see if the engines coming down from high levels...should be round 1000 rpm or lower when you shift to reverse, or are allowed to anyway.

Reverse does not have a syncronizer. It's VERY easy to grind going into it and really not a big deal. Note what SubaSkeet has said about shifting into it.

She's gonna be cranking getting into reverse if the idle is high (when the engine is cold) if you are moving at all (even rolling slightly) or just doing it too quikly and not letting it 'slip' in.

Wouldnt worry too much about it :)
