December 6, 2025Dec 6 Hello, I am trying to save a 1983 Subaru GL 4 door that was recently hit in the driver side rear door. Car has 137,000+ miles, 5 speed, FWD, is super clean (no rust). The driver side rear door took the brunt of the impact so not really repairable at this time. We would like to save the car if possible but the insurance company of course would like to total. Does anyone have a driver side rear door shell for sell? Thanks!
December 6, 2025Dec 6 I have a driver's side rear door I pulled off someone's parts car a while back. I can't remember which part I needed out of it now. lol. Metallic red. It has some rust and probably isn't a good pick for a clean low mileage car. I wouldn't be able to ship it until next month, or even get at it to take pictures. But, if you can't find any other options, it's here. Body shops have networks of junkyards and such that can find parts, if they're going to do the work. The insurance company is going to tell you the car is worth $2. You'll need to find ebay etc listings of super clean ones going for $6000. This may involve showing them to a judge. Insurance companies suck.
December 8, 2025Dec 8 Author We have done a pretty extensive search on the West Coast here. From San Diego up through Washington State. Lots of later years 86-91 wagons and 4 doors but no 80-84 four doors or wagons with an intact driver side rear door yet. We have a decent offer from the insurance company as we provided comparables, but we really want to save the car if we can. It belongs to my youngest daughter, and she loves the look and driving it. Gen Zer driving a manual shift and having a blast in an 80's sedan. 😀 The issue seems to be there are very few 80-84 cars that are available right now for parts which is good in one sense but we need a door.
December 8, 2025Dec 8 I do have a door, and I think it's fairly straight, but if I remember right, it's rusted out along the bottom. I'm working 12 hour days until next year, and won't be able to dig it out until then.
December 8, 2025Dec 8 If it comes to no other options, my parts guy may have a door. I remember seeing an early 4 door he had. Was fairly clean if I remember, baby blue. He's a bit of a... Collector... So he may be hesitant to let it go. But if you need I can always ask. It may take a bit for me to get it. I'd probably have to buy the whole car since it's in decent condition and he may not want to part it out. :] P.S. I believe the car is actually a first gen. I remember it having an EA63 in it. But he may have something laying around, he gathered up quite a few of these Roos. Edited December 8, 2025Dec 8 by SuspiciousPizza My coffee made me remember something
December 12, 2025Dec 12 https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/186723-junkyard-82-84-gl-wagon-2wd-parting-out/ If this hasn't been crushed, and they haven't caved it in moving it with a forklift, do you want me to pull you a door? If so, what is the minimum condition you're looking for? Perfect, minor dents and rust, anything that will fill the gap between the hinges and the striker,...? It looks clean in the tiny picture I got, but there's not a lot of pixels...
December 20, 2025Dec 20 You have tried: www.car-part.com? www.row52.com? Row 52 is nearly flat-lined, but they still list stuff in California yards. Most other states have dropped off their database. And no more pullers. Yep, I tried that, meaning a puller on their site, thinking, wow, I can sell here too. Nope, it turned out to be a joke. Every puller I sent a message to, didn't respond. No responses to my classified ads. No responses to my replies to their wanted ads. Really? A couple of requests - for $5 to $10 plastic parts in Albuquerque area yards - 200 plus miles N of my location. Okay, am going to spend 7 to 8 hours total seat time - to chase plastic parts - that are likely either GONE, or DESTROYED by the SUN. You're kidding me. A complete waste of time, regrettably. Very similar to the old www.junkyarddog.com, unfortunately. Meaning becoming worthless. Those cars have dissipated from Borderland yards. There were never many here, anyway. The local yard had three subarus when they crushed out - a '77ish coupe, an '84 wagon, and an '87 wagon with a dual range transmission. All were too risky to buy and try to resell, due to several factors. Limited market. Distance from potential "buyers". LOGISTICS (the gorilla in the room) or the physical act of moving the stuff. January 11Jan 11 I've got a 1982 GL Wagon rear driver-side door in pretty good shape (see photos). There is some minor rust in the bottom left corner of the exterior. Let me know if you're interested.
January 12Jan 12 Author Sorry, been off-line due to a cold. I am working on another door that is a little closer to where we live. If it is rust free we are going to go with it. I should know by Wednesday afternoon (hopefully sooner).
