EA81 - convert to 2 cylinder?h

Featured Replies

I have heard of half a dakdak being used as a two cylinder motor, any chance of this working for a EA81? I realise a bit of fabrication work would need to go into it, but is there anything that needs to be looked out for with regards to oil and water passage?

Just another crazy Ben idea......

The EA81 not slow enough for you already?

There was talk on the old EZ board of a dude who converted an EA82 or EA81 into an air pump. Esencially it was a 2 cylinder engine and the other 2 cylinders were the air pump.

So I guess to answer, yes it is possible. Might be a good start for this idea finding this crazy air pump or the dude who made it.

Years ago flathead Ford V-8s were used as commercial air compressors, 4 cylinders for power & the other 4 as a compressor.

Also, VW engines have been used in light aircraft with 2 cylinders hacked off.

To clarify--the light plane application was of course an air-cooled VW engine cut in half.

How about this--converting a 4-cyl. diesel so that 2 cylinders run on gas, 2 on diesel? Why? To give more power while accelerating, then back off on those 2 cylinders & get diesel economy from the other 2.

Pardon me from getting off the Subaru track

Hey - that diesel idea isn't too bad, wonder if it would work in practice...

My point of view was coming from doing the hack the two cylinders off and have a ~30hp power supply to drive a non subaru application (small tractor) Other options include a sherpa 2cyl too - just that I have a good ea81 complete engine and a block in the shed... Was looking at it this afternoon and I could hack the cylinders off between the piston sleeves and the crank webbing, then link up all the water galleries. The half of the engine to use would be the one with the dizzy in place, that leaves the water pump lacking - nothing an electric water pump can't fix though...

I think a sherpa 2cyl would do the trick very nicely though...
