Sorry to be on here so much as a newbie with dumb questions, but I need to get to 15 posts before I can reply individually to thank those who have helped my daughter & me so much. I was advised how to edit but it hasn't worked for me so far.

When my daughter got her '87 wagon she was told to ALWAYS keep the revs between 3000 and 4000 RPM.

When I've driven it, the tach barely shows 3000 at the speed limit and beyond (speedo shows 3000 is just under 70 mph). Is the information about RPMs right?

We're after economy & not performance, but I sure don't want her to lug it & do damage. Also, would an '88 likely be geared the same?

2500 - 3500 will give you generally the best fuel econemy.

 

Depends on *what* '88 you are talking about - wagon, 3 door, XT, RX, etc. Some have different gearing than others.

 

Generally speaking, soobs like high RPMS. The experimental aircraft guys run the EA81's at 7000 or more for hours at a time. This is of course only done with improved cooling systems - both oil and water. 4 or 5 thousand (or even shifting at 6) isn't going to hurt the engine. The short stubby rods are very well designed for high RPM's.
