major power loss in '89 wagon

Featured Replies

1989 GL Wagon 1800cc.

At about 50 miles per hour, the car suddenly started lurching (like a new driver in a manual). The first time it happened was down hill. I put it in neutral revved it a few times and it continued okay. Later it happened again, but this time going up hill, so I did not have the luxury of coasting for awhile. I had to creep up the hill in first gear with it lurching the whole time. I pulled over and let it idle for a minute or so. Then I drove in the slow lane babying it all the way in, with no further drama. It was strange, as I drove it all week-end on steep windy mountain roads, with no problems at all. Any ideas????

thanks,

Jason

I would suspect either the fuel pump or one of the fusible links has a connection problem. They are in the box mounted on the coolant reservoir.

I had the same problem with my 86 GL 3door, and it was the spark plug wires on the distributor end. The center one (the one that feeds them all) was popped up and not really connecting. I had been playing with the distributor a few days earlier, and it took that long to start a problem, since I didn't plug that wire in properly. The connector was at an angle in the rubber boot and didn't go into the socket.

It was the fuel filter, thanks for the advice!
